Helping our small business customers
Back in August, we announced that we would be making some changes to make life easier for our small business customers.*
We said we would end automatic contract rollovers for small business customers from April 2014, as well as extending to small business customers our existing commitment not to back-bill micro-business customers for more than 12 months where we have under-billed them due to a genuine billing error on our part.
I'm delighted to say that these major changes will be coming into effect next month as planned and I'm therefore able to set out some further details on what we are doing.
We think busy people have enough deadlines to worry about without us giving them another one to meet, if they want to change their energy supply contract. So from 1 April, when a small business customer comes to the end of a fixed term contract and does not make arrangements with us to terminate or enter into a new contract, instead of being automatically locked in to a new deal, they will move to our Variable Business Rates.
This is important because it means that customers can move to a new deal with no exit fee, once their fixed period contract ends, as long as they give us 30 days' notice. This will help take away some of the pressure on customers when their contract is coming to an end. It also gives them more time to decide on their next deal, even if they haven't contacted us to terminate their contract.
We want to understand the needs of our small business customers and have worked closely with the Federation of Small Businesses in driving forward these changes.
Small businesses play a vitally important role in the UK economy and we are proud to supply them with the energy they need to power their companies. These changes will make a big difference for our customers.
